charlotte. >> more than 11,000 people turned out today. it's his last stop ahead of the democratic national convention. last week, the republican ticket scheduled its first post convention trip to virginia. if you have any doubt that the commonwealth is a hot commodity this november, consider this. take a look at the seating arrangement for the democratic national convention. virginia has one of the coveted four seat sections compared with maryland and d.c., which are barely even in the building. can we say battleground? congressman, paul ryan is representing the republican ticket while the democrats hold their convention at a reallily just outside of cleveland today. ryan compared president obama to president jimmy carter and went off vice president joe biden for saying the country is better off now than it was four years ago. mitt romney is said to be spending this week preparing for the debate. his motorcade, that's it right there, hit a snag today. when it had to wait for a slow moving tractor to get out of the way along a dirt road. not a lot of space. republicans have lost a battle

to keep the constitution party candidate off virginia's ballot. virgil would draw votes away from mitt romney. today, virginia state board of elections ruled good petitions were gathered legally. he can appear on the ballot in november. >> just months after losing his gig with the monday night football, hank williams is in the headlines again for what he is saying about president obama. the network fired the singer after he compared the president to adolf hitler.  this weekend at a texas music festival, he told the crowd, we have a muslim for a president who hates cowboys, hates cowgirls, hates fishing, hates farming, loves gays and we hate him. that comment drew applause from the crowd. no comment from the white house on that one tonight, so what do you think about williams' comment? do you care whoo any celebrity has to say about politics? do you think we aught to be giving it the time of day? we also have time for your comments on our facebook page

asked pepco for a schedule of when power will be cut to specific areas. we're waiting for a response this evening. once we get that information, we'll share it with you and post it at wusa9.com. a car sitting in the middle of the road running, no driver in it. police did find an eight month old child sitting in it. anny hong is live with more on an arrest. anny. >> anita, prince william county police say this is one of their more stranger stories. they responded to a call on an hourglass lane and pariscope. now they thought they were responding to a car crash, but instead, they found an abandoned car with an eight month old baby girl in the backseat. >> he was under the influence of alcohol at the time and has been driving under the influence with a child in the

car. >> police arrested and charged nana kwabena. he is related to the child. police would not say how they were related just to protect her identity. police also add that the baby girl was left in the car alone for about 15 to 20 minutes or so, but the good news is, she is doing just fine. she was not injured and she is back with her family tonight. we are live in prince william county, anny hong, 9news now, back to you. >> a good outcome. weather permitting, maryland highway crews will remove some trees that have been deemed troublesome. five big elms along wisconsin avenue between norwood drive. the work starts wednesday. commuters be on the lookout for lane closures. there isn't any tree that could save you from the humidity out there today. part of the reason for our 9 weather code yellow alert. top. >> yeah, that and the fact we

may have thunderstorms. they will be few and far between. those that develop could produce heavy rain because of the tropical atmosphere. let's start with radar. we added lightning, not a lot of lightning, thankfully, but notice they are still developing, still coming in from the west and southwest. we're going to keep the chance of a shower and thunderstorm in. also overnight. right now, heaviest activity just to the northeast of cumberland. another storm just to the west of romney. and really, these storms were pretty hefty earlier in the day that moved across southern maryland. they have weakened. good news there. and right now nothing is around the stadium. the nats stadium. watching these showers toward manassas, and over toward culpeper. they are all green. there's nothing heavy. no yellows or reds. temperatures look good. 84 manassas, 84 downtown. 86 in fredericksburg. problem is, it's just humid out. for tonight, partly to mostly cloudy, muggy, a few

a bit of a reprieve for commuters who drive from downtown bethesda. that stretch that was slated to close today is still open. that's because the start of the

project has been pushed back until friday night. the road is slated to close between bethesda avenue and miller avenue for about two years. for some major construction projects there in bethesda. get ready as well for big changes at lake forest mall. the washington post reports the connecticut based company bought the mall for nearly $100 million. five mile capital partners plans $20 million in improvements, including possibility of adding big box stores. >> afghan refugee struggled for years to make a living as a small businessman in america. now he is in a new fight with his arlington landlord over art. bruce leshan has the story. >> it is interesting. i'm an artist myself. >> i think it's pretty. >> i wouldn't want them near my business. >> on south 23rd street. >> i think it's nice to have artwork public for people to look at. >> a battle rages over a mural painted on the side of the smoke shop. >> i think it doesn't fit in this neighborhood. >> it's beautiful and it has

outside. live michael and son cam. it's nice out temperature wise. there's a few breaks in the clouds. the dew point in the low 70s. that is just not comfortable. pressure is falling a little bit at 29.88 inches of mercury. so when the humidity is 70% or the dew points in the low to mid 70s, that's just not a comfortable air mass. now the radar with lightning, good news is, not much lightning. this storm has intensified over the past half an hour and northeast of cumberland. a couple lighter storms south of 66. we'll watch these. they are moving off to the north and east. for the most part, it's quiet on the way home, which is a good thing. looking at live doppler. some showers northwest of cumberland. these shower haves s have died out a little bit. way out here, we are out into west virginia. we'll watch those, too. even though we are going to lose the sunshine, we're going to keep the chance of a shower

or thunderstorm in. all right, baseball. temperatures in the 80s as we host the cubs. slight chance of a shower. winds out of the south at 9. 22 victories. combination of losses from the braves. we win the division. 84 right now in great falls. 86 in rockville. 82 in fairfax. again, these temperatures are nice, but the humidity is not so nice. 87 in college park. one of the higher readings, 84 in bowie. so still humid and unsettled. a few thunderstorms tonight. bring your umbrella to the nats game to seal the deal. more thunderstorms tomorrow and any storm that develop, because of the tropical nature of the atmosphere could produce heavy rain. and a hot finish to the week. we'll be hot and humid on thursday and friday. for tonight, partly cloudy, muggy, a few thunderstorms possible. some could be hefty in terms of rain fall. lows between 70 and 75. winds southwest at 10. so inside the beltway in downtown, we're talking mid

70s. north and west, still 70 in gaithersburg, 74 downtown. 72 for a low in college park. and even out in sterling and leesburg and manassas, not going to make it into the 60s tonight, probably around 70. tomorrow morning, partly sunny, warm and humid. a late shower possible. the morning commute should be dry. and by afternoon, well partly sunny, hot and humid. showers and storms possible. high temperatures near 90. winds out of the southwest at 10. some storms again could produce some heavy rain. so high temperatures upper 80s primarily gaithersburg, rockville. maybe a touch 90 until arlington. 89 downtown. 88 over in bowie. and even upper 80s in reston and fairfax. even leesburg and manassas will be in the upper 80s to almost 90. so we'll break it down for you. 70s to start. 82 to 86 by noon. slight chance of a shower. better chance of a thunderstorm by evening. 86 to 90 by evening. now the next three days,

because of heat and chance for thunderstorms, we'll keep it code yellow wednesday, thursday, and friday. 91 thursday. 91 friday with afternoon storms. now the next seven days, well, it still stays unsettled. afternoon storm on saturday. so not a washout on saturday, temperatures still near 90. a much better chance sunday and monday. temperatures are going in the right direction. back to 80. and cooler next week. we slowly dry out. tuesday we run the risk of a thunderstorm. >> a little messy there. >> a little bit. temperatures going down. >> it could have some rain delays tonight? >> just a very slight chance. >> let's hope that's the case. >> kristen berset is at nationals park where the nats are set to take on the chicago cubs. hey kristen. >> it's a little muggy out here, but there's a breeze that picked up. it cooled off quite a bit. the nats game number two against the cubbies tonight. one night after their big milestone win. we'll hear from them talking

the nats. looking to bring his personal win/loss record back. getting start for chicago. highlights for you at 11. all right, this saturday we also got our first look at this season's maryland terrapins. a team trying to improve on last year's two-win season. it's going to be a tough test for them. half of their roster transferred from the program and they have a freshman quarterback under center. what we saw was a very rough day on saturday. didn't leave too many terps fans optimistic. maryland won 7-6 and if it wasn't for the defense, this game could have been a much different outcome. freshman, qb, threw two first half interceptions, but the defense bailed him out holding their opponents to two field goals. randy said his offense is an obvious work in progress. >> our goal is to not be ourselves.
